Saw a mama Muscovy duck with five tiny ducklings this morning on the banks of a drainage channel.
Later on picked up a mama turtle in the road out looking for a place to lay eggs and moved her to a likely spot. Last week, one crawled up from one of the flood control ponds into our yard. She was laying eggs in the sandy dirt near our back yard side walk. Took her over an hour.
Made the work of lugging a weighted back pack for three miles on my walk well worth the effort. I know it’s a losing battle, but I’ll continue fighting old age with exercise. Sweaty and unpleasant, but better than lying around doing nothing.
I’ll post an update on the Lone Cormorant at some point. I’m amazed he’s still around.

I just checked on cormorants as I was not familiar with them and discovered that the typical lifespan is between 6 to 11 years, depending on the species, but that some live past 20. Amazing! I’m so glad you were in the right place at the right time to rescue the mama turtle. I’m very impressed with your exercise routine. I know it will help you and being out in nature is peaceful and beautiful.

Walking neighborhoods is shabby compared to walking in the countryside. I envy those of you with country homes.
Fortunately, the is a large state park nearby that has a planetarium with 23 steps of stairs to the roof. I try to get there once per week to climb as many flights as I can, with the weighted back pack. Aside from the low level muscle and aerobic benefits, it is the best exercise of all for the back damage I foolishly earned when I was 27.
Unfortunately, nothing I do now generates the wonderful runners high I used to get after jogging 6 miles. Really miss that.
BUT, I can heartily recommend exercise for minimizing the woes of aging. My goal is to stay active until I suddenly drop dead. Slow death under medical care is my greatest fear.

It is Hunter v. US, from Justice Kagan. The vote appears to be 8-1, with Thomas dissenting.
The court today holds (“principally,” Kagan writes) that an appeal waiver cannot be enforced “when it would result in a miscarriage of justice–meaning, when it would leave in place the kind of egregious error that would bring the judicial system into disrepute.”
The court today holds (“principally,” Kagan writes) that an appeal waiver cannot be enforced “when it would result in a miscarriage of justice–meaning, when it would leave in place the kind of egregious error that would bring the judicial system into disrepute.”
The question in this case was when a criminal defendant can appeal despite having waived some or all of his right to appeal. The defendant in the case, Munson Hunter, pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting wire fraud; as part of the plea deal, the government dismissed nine other counts with which Hunter had been charged. Hunter also agreed to waive his right to appeal except for claims that his lawyer’s performance had been so poor that it had effectively deprived him of his constitutional right to be represented by an attorney. In addition to a sentence of over four years in prison, the court also required him to receive mental health treatment and take medicine as part of his supervised release. Hunter wanted to challenge that condition, but the Fifth Circuit ruled that the appeal waiver barred him from doing so – even if the judge had advised him that he had a right to appeal.

A Palm Coast, Florida, mother who shot an alleged intruder Monday afternoon told reporters she grabbed a gun and did what she thought was necessary to protect her children. Courtney Price, a Palm Coast, Florida mother, shot and wounded Michael McDonald, 33, after he allegedly broke into her home, threatened her and her two children, and refused to leave.
The Incident: On Sunday, June 14, 2026, McDonald entered Price’s residence, demanded money, and aggressively approached her family. After Price warned him she was armed and ordered him to leave, he continued advancing, stating, “I don’t care… shoot me.”
The Shooting: Price fired a single shot, striking McDonald in the arm. She stated, “I did what I had to do to protect my children and myself,” noting it was her first time using the firearm she had owned for six months.
Legal Outcome: McDonald fled to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and was later arrested, charged with burglary with assault or battery. Flagler County Sheriff’s Office officials, including Chief Deputy Joe Barile and Sheriff Rick Staly, confirmed Price acted lawfully under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law and faces no charges.
