I’m from Texas and i have heard that since i was a young kid, then when i was Arkansas, i heard them saying that, then Kansas, then Colorado, then Lousiana and Alabama. After traveling for years, i believe the only state that doesn’t say that is California. 😆

My grandpa used to tow us kids around a snowy meadow on a saucer from behind a snow mobile. No doubt completely illegal now.
And no helmets.
I’ve really been missing the 70s lately.

Wisconsin being around a 17.5 hours’ drive north from Texas, that makes meteorological sense, doesn’t it?

Sidetracksusie

No, not only in Texas. Wyoming excels at this.
We were -24 (-37 wind chill) last week with a solid week of highs in the negative temps and today it was 52. People wore shorts today, 70 degree temp change will make you break a sweat, lol.
Saturday was skijoring in Gillette but our snow is too deep for golf.
So happy that Texas is thawing out.

Work with several folks who reside down in Texas. Sounds like the plumbers and builders are going to be busy for quite some time. Lots of damage from the freezing pipes, both inside and out. Sucks.

Glad to see some folks blowing off steam and having fun.

Weather gets wierd. I live just north of Phx, AZ and we had 12 inches of snow, about 4 weeks ago. When I say just North of Phx, I mean just outside of North Scottsdale. 2 days later it was in the 70s. Today it is about 76. Happened about 8 years ago, too. Sh*t happens. Sure is beautiful here, and it is beautiful in Texas.

Peabody

About 1975 it snowed in Tucson AZ on March 12, several inches deep. I’m referring to inside the city, not just the foothills or Mount Lemmon. I made a giant snowman. I thought this must’ve set a record, because most winters Tucson doesn’t get snow at all.

Then a month later, on April 16, Tucson got a bigger snowstorm than the one in March!

This part of Wisconsin had -33 last week and 43 above today. 76 degree temperature swing in a week. The cows were really farting.

Ulf
Ulf

Actually, it’s not only in Texas. Speaking from experience, temperature swings like that are relatively common anywhere in North America where it gets cold. Texans have a tendency to think a lot of things only happen in Texas that are actually commonplace.

Ulf

White flakes of frozen water falling out of the sky like rain? Ho ho man! Only in Texas!

johnyaya

Extreme swings are common in continental areas far from the ocean. It’s because large bodies of water moderate temperature; when there’s no water around, temps can change very fast. Weather 101

The modern horse (Equus caballus) evolved on the North American continent. Disappearing from this area around 10,000 years ago (end of the Pleistocene epoch), it survived on the European/Asian continent. Horses were brought back to North America by the Spanish in the 1500s. Stray horses became known as mustangs, from the Spanish word mesteño.

When I lived in Texas the saying was, if you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes. Absolutely the truth. I apologize to anyone who has already posted this.

That was the saying I heard growing up in NH, then heard it in NJ, then in NC…. The only people who say that have never moved.

In Kansas we say wait 10 minutes.

Only get “Cold cold cold and warm warm warm” in Texas in “one week”? First, I am pretty sure a “week” isn’t 10 days. So it wasn’t in “one week”. Second , we have weather swings like that in central NC every year. It’s not uncommon at all in late winter and early spring. We used to have the same sharp weather shifts in southern New England as well. I imagine there are many parts of the country that have similar swings. So it may be “new” for that part of Texas, but it’s hardly a novel occurrence across the US.

BossyBanjoankles
BossyBanjoankles

But NC can encounter another kind of problem than Texas…..ya’ll rely on nuclear energy and you get hit by hurricanes. And you can have two hurricane hits one after another like in 1999 (around that time. Long drought then wham two hurricanes in a row and hence over saturation and flood….one of those hurricanes I think was named Floyd).

JamesBen
JamesBen

The extreme cold, coupled with a massive snow event is extremely rare for Texas, as we saw – but great temperature swings are very common..
.
Add to that, it can be snowing in the Texas panhandle and 900 miles away, be 80° in semi-tropical Brownsville.
