I am a computer engineer who spent years working in Silicon Valley. I have always had a real problem with the H1B program. I saw American engineers laid off because companies such as AMD and Intel could hire foreign engineers through this program for a lot less money and work them ridiculously long hours. This was done after the American engineers trained them before being laid off. I managed some of these H1B engineers and their culture did get in the way. I had to instruct them on hygiene and request that they use English when they were working and in meetings. I also found their engineering skills not to be on par with American engineers. There was also a problem with them sharing code between companies thus breaking confidentiality agreements. I remember a suit with Novell in the late 1990’s pertaining to this.
I am disappointed with Trump’s stand on this. There are many good American engineers who are willing to work but not for 3rd world wages and working conditions.
