In addition to Cobalt’s problems, the additional Copper needed for the ‘ great’ EV conversion is totally under estimated. In order to charge a Tesla Model 3 from 10% to 90% in 30 minutes you initially are drawing 250kW. That’s 680 Amps at 400Volts. That’s equivalent to turning on 250 1kW Window AC units at once! ” Within years, batteries won’t even need cobalt, nickel, or rare earths, or any other metals” – Then why aren’t we waiting these “years” rather than trashing the planet and human life?
Joey B.
Because the only reason we are on the cusp of those breakthroughs is that we’ve worked our way there. That’s how technology works. We didn’t suddenly invent the iPhone 14. We had to go through many years of incremental improvements until we learned enough to get there. We also used to have lead in gasoline. We didn’t used to have seatbelts. Or airbags. A realistic time frame for their widespread suitability is more on the order of 30 – 50 years from now.
Two things will be needed. Battery technology will have to make near miraculous advancements to eliminate the ‘mining’ issue.
Then, even with an environmentally friendly battery, the issue of charging said battery will remain. If that can be achieved primarily with environmentally friendly ‘solar’ great.
Until that advancement occurs any charging method will involve the carbon based sources we currently use. (Unless we finally decide nuclear generation doesn’t spell doom for the planet.)
What conservatives are concerned with is that these people seem to think this transition can be achieved in a short time and that they simply do not give a rats backside about the effect their ill-conceived, irrational ideas might have on our society and the freedoms we enjoy.

Thanks for the considered response. The technology in EVs is improving MUCH faster than ICE vehicles have over the years. The main drawbacks are with non-Tesla charging systems. And that drawback is because the big auto companies refused to accept Tesla’s offer to use their charging standard FOR FREE. VERY good article. Major key point:
“As recently as 1990, the U.S. was the world’s number-one producer of minerals. Today, it is in seventh place. Even though the nation has vast mineral reserves worth trillions of dollars, America is now 100% dependent on imports for some 17 key minerals, and, for another 29, over half of domestic needs are imported.”
Losing leverage like this is self destruction 101, all driven by the lie/scam of climate change.

Terrific! Someone actually read it. Thank you.
The real money quote I believe is just above yours though.
“This paper turns to a different reality: all energy-producing machinery must be fabricated from materials extracted from the earth. No energy system, in short, is actually “renewable,” since all machines require the continual mining and processing of millions of tons of primary materials and the disposal of hardware that inevitably wears out.
Compared with hydrocarbons, green machines entail, on average, a 10-fold increase in the quantities of materials extracted and processed to produce the same amount of energy.”
What Mills writes is pretty much the deal breaker for the Green Fantasy.
Guy48065
You’re backing the wrong horse.
While we’re all waiting for Mr. Fusion to become a reality there are several technologies currently on the table. The one with the worst energy density is batteries. EVs will faceplant soon–non-toxic, efficient batteries are not found in our lifetime.
Hydrogen fuel cells will be the bridge to a cleaner future.
Joey B.
No, hydrogen is not a good fuel source for cars. Perhaps for long-haul trucks, trains, boats, and planes. But not passenger cars.
Bill K
I don’t hate electric cars, but I’m not sorry to say they’re not an environmental panacea.

No, hydrogen is not a good fuel source for cars. Perhaps for long-haul trucks, trains, boats, and planes. But not passenger cars.
I don’t hate electric cars, but I’m not sorry to say they’re not an environmental panacea.
I never even implied that they were a panacea. They are a good technology that is improving extremely quickly. I own mostly gas-powered cars myself. I just recognize good tech and don’t want to see propagandists try to lump it in with windmills, carbon taxes, and idiotic green new deals.
Computers will make the economy paperless!!!
My question is, where are we going to get the electrical power to charge the 290 million replacements for ICE vehicles?
Takes a decade to approve and construct new power generating plants. Somebody better start building.
You want coal, natural gas, or nuclear?
Nuclear.
The EV tech isn’t ready for what gov’t is trying to impose now.
Ohio we’re the set off the big Burn last month there is tons of Calbolt? Man I bet thoughs mining companies could buy up a lot of land there for really cheap.
I wonder if that was planned using a Fedral Rail Road to burn 🔥 all those chemicals?
EV owners are environmentally toxic and supporters of slavery & child abuse. How’s that for virtue signaling.
Always follow the money.
