College was so ridiculous when I graduated High School, I enlisted in the Navy Nuclear Power Program.
2 years of school – mine was Electronics Technician for one year, then a year of Nuclear Power School.
Served 8 years and had a GI Bill – revoked – when I got out.
When I enlisted a veteran supposedly had 10 years to use the GI Bill. Congress suspended payments on the Vietnam Era GI Bill 12/31/89.
Lesson – there may be a GI Bill when you enlist. It may not be there when you get out.
So “THE GI BILL” is a definite maybe for veterans. In my case – it was nada.

Just wondering where this “free” tree is that keeps growing all this “free” stuff? Do you have to fertilize this tree, and if so is the fertilizer free? The labor of the person that will fertilize the tree? The plumber that installed the water lines to bring water to the “free” tree?

I love when idiots throw around that “free” terminology! Just because YOU don’t pay for it doesn’t mean it’s “free”!

Malcolm Smith

It’s a matter of preference. I prefer a country where higher education, like health care, is free; that is, paid for through taxation that is progressive, ensuring that those who are better off financially pay a higher share for the common good. In Scotland, for example, this has meant that rich and poor have access to free education at universities, technical colleges, teacher colleges and police colleges. Before free higher education was introduced, many working class people could not afford to go to university. Likewise, before healthcare was free, people died due to lack of access, just as they do to this day in the United States. To my mind, it’s difficult to ethically defend a system where access to education and healthcare is based upon one’s ability to pay. That might be ethically defensible if there were a level playing field, but that is never possible in reality.

Frankiev
Frankiev

Perhaps you need to move to one of those failing liberal bastions of socialism like Cuba or Venezuela where everything is free and nothing is available or of importance.

Bridge

So, are you one of the rich ones?Fo you like to feel superior. The GI bill after WW2, allowed middle class and poor people to go to college for the first time in the history of our country. That allowed the USA to dominate world economic’s during the last half of the 20th century. Education and opportunities are the key. Oh yeah, you probably have no problem with a $750,000,000,000 military budget, with all of it’s pork barrel politics and waste.

Pete Juvet

You don’t seem to understand that the GI bill was introduced to those who served their time in the military defending this country and other countries as well.
The GI bill is still here you just have to earn it by serving in United States military.

I think the cost of “higher education” plus the “benefits” of a college degree are ridiculous. I went to a local community college in the 1960s where tuition was $50 a semester plus lab fees and books and a parking permit. I commuted to school and lived at home with my parents, worked in the family business and did my chores without complaint. No student loans. I did have a scholarship that paid my tuition. I was studying to become a school teacher which was one of only 3 career choices for women at the time (other were nursing or secretarial/bookkeeping). They were really pushing for teachers at the time which meant the career path was full of aspiring teachers when I graduated after 4 years.

I married and had a family but had to reenter the work force in the 1970s. There was a surplus of teachers and few positions opening up. God opened up a new career path for me in social work, Children’s Protective Services. No, I was NOT one of those child snatchers. I worked with parents to keep their families intact. During the course of following that path, the State of Texas made a stipend plan available to its employees and I was able to go into a Master’s Degree plan for Social Work. No student loans. I agreed to work for the state for a specified period of time and signed a contract and I worked full-time and went to classes on the weekends, spending one semester on campus as a full-time student.

I retired from Social Work in 2011 after working with people from the cradle to the grave. I worked for the State, for hospitals in discharge planning and social work, for Hospice and Home Health, and as a mental health therapist in nursing homes and eventually in a locked unit for adolescents.

College was NOT playtime for me. I was not in a sorority and neither were my friends. I lived life much as I had as a high school student. Yes, there were football games to go to and social events, even a political rally or two but for I was there to prepare for teaching junior high/middle school and high school subjects, English and history. Little did I know that most history teachers were actually in the coaching profession and taught history as a side line and their wives (former cheerleaders) did the same with the English classes. Rude awakening.

Now the colleges have multi-million dollar athletic complexes and stadiums. The coaches are millionaires and make money on the side endorsing products (shoes, vitamins, sporting equipment, vehicles, etc.). Is it any wonder the colleges are turning out a “me” centered group of child-adults who majored in the easy “Mickey Mouse” courses of study that amount to a big nothing at all?

This student loan program was nothing but a vote getting scheme by Demorats to get the college students vote with other people’s money. The courts may throw it out as unconstitutional. Just shows how corrupt our system is. This is just miniscule part of the corruption. It will be over when we are so far in debt that no one will want to hold US dollars as they will be near worthless. Think Rome, Venezuela, Argentina, Germany and others. Our politicians are sick for power at all costs to the taxpayer. It’s time for fiscal responsibility and honest politicians. Probably not possible.

Michael Lavender
Michael Lavender

The reason college has become “unaffordable” is because the government encourages student loans and guarantees payment if they default. As a result, our institutions of higher learning have an incentive to continually increase the cost.
Remove all student loans from any government guarantees and you will see the number of loans decrease. and the cost will start reducing to be competitive relative to benefits the students will have in relationship to their cost.

We already have “free education” offered from preschool through High School every where without expecting a demonstration of success in preparation for College already for those students willing to attend regularly and participate in the process. Is there any empirical data that suggests those unwilling to do so to this point are going to change at “Graduation” How is “free” working out for taxpayers now?

The other reason is the high salaries of these so called “professors” who average $300,000. a year sometimes for part time work. That’s not counting their lifetime insurance and retirement benefits! THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS PAY TO HAVE OUR KIDS INDOCTRINATED WITH LIBERAL HOOEY!

Steven
Steven

Hang on, “average $300,000 a year”? I don’t know where you get your information, but since the 1970’s colleges and universities mostly hire teachers as adjunct professors. This let’s the schools off the hook for “perks” such as a position guaranteed for even the next quarter or semester. If also means no retirement benefits, and many often need to work at 2 different schools just to make ends meet. If you are made an assistant professor then you may be on a career track to eventually become a full professor, but unless you author something like a popular textbook or other writings that give you notoriety, you teach because you really think it is the best thing you can do for yourself and the country. I know one professor near retirement at a high end (expensive) private college in Southern California who makes $150,000, but he is head of his department, written a lot, and has been teaching for 30+ years. I believe the upper administrators are the ones to pull down the big bucks, and if all they are learning is “LIBERAL HOOEY” then where is it written you have to pay for such schooling? Maybe we should have sent and paid for our kids to go to Trump University?

Germany’s educational system is not like ours. Nor is its government. Look up how their systen is run and the tests the children must take to advance in their educational sytem. Those tests detremine which kids go to vocational schools or which go to college. We have local public education (i.e., like the Philadelphia or Waco, TX Boards of Education). Each US city and county run their own public schools and receive their funding from local taxes, with possibly some funds provided by the state and from grants from the federal government. I live in Fairfax County which has a high tax base and which runs a very good school system. Trying to compare Germany education syten to ours is like comparing apples to lug nuts – ther is no comparison.

Germany has had to pay 145 billion euros for the upkeep of the muslims who swarmed its borders. Better to have the lending institutions determine the interest rates charged based on the degree that is being sought. Then remove all government subsidies and guarantees, make the individual responsible for payment, just they would be if they bought a car or anything else on credit.

As brilliant a statement as I’ve read regarding the disparity in wealth in this country. I paid my wage through college as a hospital male aide nights, weekends and summers beginning in high school. I started a $1.15 an hour! and one week I grossed $100.00. Do the math! My parents helped to the extent they could and when I quit school in my senior year of college to join the Army there was NO debt! Subsidizing college costs was not in the stars.
I am now retired from a VERY high paying career and could afford to send our grandkids to college at no cost to them IF we elected to. We elected not pay the bill to in order to teach them economics for which they deserve an ‘A’ since their futures are guaranteed by their efforts, both scholastic and vocational. It seems to me, that the folks, that went to college, and made something of themselfes, are paying or have paid off their loans, as a responsible person would do!!! Now, if some of these folks are having legitamet, such as health problems , with making thier payments, loan forgiveness should be considered on a one on one basis.

No one understands how a personal loan becomes the responsibility of the general public. It’s politically a clever idea to bilk taxpayers while making the politicians who dreamed it up to be seen as hero’s by the indebted college voter. The college loves the loan so the get to buy more students to stay longer and run up the tab. However, the steal happens after the student leaves and becomes responsible. But, after the first year if the bare minimum payments are made, the college gets paid the full amount due and the loan moves to the Feds. From then on, the student is responsible. If they don’t pay, they can be hassled. They cannot discharge it thru bankruptcy but it does stop when the student dies. It’s a sham lent by the efforts of the school who has no consequences of bad lending practices. The taxpayer now and the grandchildren are the ones holding the undeserved debt

I had four jobs, one being in the Coast Guard Reserves, one driving tractor for a farmer, one working at the University as a custodian part time and one detailing cars(which I still do today). The other hours I was in school and studying. Did I pay as I went, yes, did I owe when I graduated, no. How could I have possibly done it? I graduated in 1976 with a BA and 81 with a teaching certificate and I did it all with effort, determination, living in a trailer, eating top ramen and staying focused.
Liberals want a free ride and a hand out, if it feels good then I want it, and I deserve it for being lazy. No consequences for their actions, and no thought process what happens in the end.
