Schumer is now against Puerto Rican statehood…

NEWS JUNKIES -- CHECK OUT OUR HOMEPAGE

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer quietly flipped on his position over Puerto Rican statehood this week, declaring his opposition to the idea after having endorsed it last year.

During a community Zoom meeting Thursday, Schumer said he now opposes Puerto Rican statehood. “I don’t agree with them, I’m not going to support their statehood bill,” Schumer said of legislation from Democrat Ritchie Torres that would open the door to Puerto Rico becoming a state.

Flash back to four months ago, however, and Schumer held the opposite position. “Believe me, on D.C. and Puerto Rico, particularly if Puerto Rico votes for it — D.C. already has voted for it and wants it — I’d love to make them states,” Schumer told MSNBC’s Joy Reid in October.

Schumer endorsed Puerto Rican statehood last fall as a threat to intimidate Republicans from confirming then-Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court weeks before the November election.

RED STATE

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez — shouldn’t she shamed by the fact her family name is the same as a Spanish Conquistador, a colonizer of Central and South American, and a subjugator of indigenous peoples?

But I digress — AOC is of Puerto Rican ethnicity on both sides of her family, with her mother having been born in Puerto Rico. She represents a heavily Latino congressional district centered in the Bronx in New York City. There are over 700,000 residents in New York City of Puerto Rican heritage.

There is likely no issue that Chuck Schumer could advance legislatively that would assist him in separating AOC from her natural Puerto Rican constituency in the New York electorate.

I can explain that. Income tax is 4% in PR.
Stay long enough to be a resident and just visit in the winter from New Yawk. His rich supporters are probably doing that now and telling him to back off. Besides the PR Island needs the money very badly.

The reality is those Latinos in PR that are paying attention know all of the freebies they enjoy now will come at a heavy price if statehood is achieved. Think about the taxes and federal intrusion that awaits them. Why buy the cow if you’re getting the milk for free?

Although I think that most Puerto Ricans in the continental U.S. vote Democrat, we don’t know if the people in the island would do so if they become a state. It is a “conservative” populace there. But they won’t vote for a White-people-first party for sure.

The Republican party is doomed long term if they don’t get more Latinos onboard.

ThomYorke
ThomYorke

According to Wikipedia Puerto Rico is 76% white. Most “Latinos” in PR think of themselves as white. The one non voting member of congress they have is Republican. Schumer found out that Trump had a 65-70% favorability rating in their own in their own internal polls. He would rally hard there to get two new Republican senators. Thus the flip.

Atomic Reverend
Atomic Reverend

A “latino” is not white except is census data and most Latinos including Puerto Ricans think of themselves as Latino (Hispanic).
And although we cannot be 100% sure how Puerto Ricans would vote in a election we know that the only nationality that votes conservative that is Latino by a pretty large margin is Cubans and we can assume it is because they have lived under communism and don’t want to go back to socialism. We also know that the Puerto Ricans in New York City voted for AOC overwhelmingly so it would be a pretty wise assumption that the ones in Puerto Rico will vote socialist Democrat also.
Call it a suspicion or an assumption but I really believe that Chuck Schumer knows the AOC is the future of the Democrat party as scary as that is for all of us that are not communist. If Puerto Ricans become a state there is potentially more people that would vote for her if she ran for a higher office say something like president which I believe she will be running for in about 8 or 12 years

CommonCents
CommonCents

You’ve been drinking too much leftist propaganda. ‘Hispanic’ is a LANGUAGE group, not a racial group… much as democrat communists want everyone to think otherwise. Spain is in Europe. Spaniards are white Europeans. Latin originates from Europeans (Italy, Greece, Spain, etc).

Don’t confuse language with ethnicity. Much of South America is white European ancestry.

Pedro el Malo
Pedro el Malo

Most Latinos in New York City, vote like most people in New York city: for democrats

Duh

That doesn’t prove your point, though

Pedro el Malo
Pedro el Malo

“White” for a lot of Latinos living in the U.S. means “Anglo white”. That is, a white of northern/northwestern European ancestry (English, German, Sweden, Northern Italy, etc.)

This kind of thought is shared even among Latinos who look like Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz. They aren’t “whites” in their minds

Atomic Reverend
Atomic Reverend

Or we just stop immigration.
And ehite people start making babies again and grow the base organically.
But demographics are our destiny and we will all be socialists soon enough because it is a fact in every election since the mid 60s 70% of Latinos will vote Democrat 80% of Asians will vote Democrat 90% of blacks will vote Democrat and only about 50% of whites…
There is only one demographic shrinking in this nation and that is whites but I digress.

Meanwhile, the statehood drive for DC is still on course.
.
It’s against the Supreme law of the land (The Constitution, 23rd amendment) for the District of Columbia to become a state. In fact it is not actually part of the United States.

DC can become a state only if the 23rd Amendment was repealed. 38 states must ratify it and return it in the exact identical language the Articles of Ratification were sent.
.
This is why the Income Tax Act is unconstitutional, because the state majority wasn’t reached. Altered Articles can’t be counted with the original Articles because they are not the same and some states did alter the language before the Article fraud was passed and also WITHOUT a Quorum…
.
This should be interesting…

LShall

It seems that the statehood thing is a dumb topic because it takes the states to ratify it and that is not going to happen no matter what.

For his part, he probably realized the drain Puerto Rican statehood would place on the federal government, and he needs to keep his constituents on welfare and happy to prolong his political career. I really don’t get it. Puto Rico becoming a state gives at least 2 Democrat congressbitches and 2 Democrat Senators FOR LIFE!! Pedro el Malo
Pedro el Malo

English is compulsorily taught in PR schools.

Did it occur to you that a lot of them don’t become fluent because they do not need to?

(many can’t, though, due to lack of support at home)

In any case, the claim I responded to is that somehow PRicans would demand be spoken in Spanish (e.g., in Wyoming!!) if PR becomes a state. That is garbage nonsense. They could do that right now, but they don’t (widespreadly anyway)

Atomic Reverend

The United States does not have a national language. It will not be Spanish nor will it be English… We can assume the English will stay the predominant language in the nation because it is the language of business and trade across the entire world including Asia and Europe.

I’m not sure I’m buying that. If they were ‘out there, radical leftists’, Schumer would be tripping over himself to admit them. Many PR residents don’t want statehood they like keeping their income and not having the US government take 20% of it. Not paying income tax is a nice price to pay for not being ‘represented’ in Washington D.C. Can’t say they’re missing much as a lot of mainlanders would argue their elected representatives and senators do a very poor job of representing their constituents.
