SOPERTON, Ga. – The interstate that connects the Atlanta area to the Georgia coast was closed in both directions after a truck driving on the GA-86 with its bed raised, struck the bridge from below.

The crash caused the bridge to shift about six feet, the agency said. It shared photos on social media that show the bridge dislodged from its concrete base.

Traffic will be detoured around Interstate 16 between exits 71 and 78 for at least several days as the bridge over GA-86 in Treutlen County is demolished and rebuilt, the Georgia Department of Transportation said.

How in the heck does anyone manage this sort of “accident” except by doing it on purpose?

Old Fashioned

Stock answer, off the cuff: Gummy Bears.
I say that as a Canadian, where marjuana was legalized.
Except people now interpret that privilege to mean that one can go to work stoned.
Stoned out of their gourds.
Obviously, smoke stench would give them away.
So they buy LEGAL edibles, everywhere.

The ones used by government employees that oversee my housing prefer GUMMY BEARS.

They are literally those delightful coloured gel type candy for kids,
organic or junk food varieties, that are permeated with canabis products.

They taste so good, gotta eat a few.

Then go to work.

Then drive a truck with the bed raised.

Well . . . you see . . . . that’s the problem. The real function of gubment is not to do the simpilist, most economical thing, but to study the issue with at least seven committees, (and each committee has veto power) find the most expensive way to “fix” and then double the cost due to earmarks. Now that’s simple.

wouldnt the hydraulic pump burn up going at interstate speeds if the controls were engaged? Im thinking the PTO would have failed and busted something, causing a massive hydraulic failure and the bed would come down on its own?

You can’t, not know…either done on purpose(that we will discover later on) or ???? .cause if the hydraulics gave out it would just collapse down…..and how the hell did it move the bridge at all?who in the hell is building the bridges in GA. for it to move?from this?and show us a picture of the driver…….I would really like to see this ignorant idiot…(but bless his little heart)he did go thru the windshield?RIGHT? didn’t he? oh, so many, many questions about this fcukup.

So many things about this story. How do you NOT notice that the bed of your truck is raised? Why was said truck even able to move the bridge at all? First, it didn’t move six feet, look at the pic. In any regard, that truck must have been going 100 miles an hour to have that much force exerted on the bridge or that deck wasn’t put on correctly.

I’m still trying to understand why a gravel loader would be driving down the highway with the bed at full extension and how in the hell that steel and pneumatic system absorbed all the impact force without cracking and exploding. Video of this would be epic if no one was seriously injured.

You can’t say that because you can’t tell from the picture. It moved multiple feet, judging by the divider lines! THE DRIVER IS A MORON and there are many!

According to Georgia DOT, it moved 5′ 8″. Some of the photos are deceptive because the bridge was more than a foot lower than the road after the crash.

No way did it drive off the bridge. The driver waas on the highway below with the bed up as he drove, then he hit the overpass, the photos don’t lie.

Bill
Bill

Just click on the “continue reading” and you’ll read that the Georgia DOT Commissioner said apparently the driver of the truck attempted to drive under the bridge with his dump bed up/raised. As a former driver in the construction equipment hauling business, I have seen this happen numerous times. A driver has a 80k pound boom lift on his truck, doesn’t ensure the boom is fully retracted and down, hits the bottom of the bridge or overpass. Quiet common with careless drivers who are too busy talking and playing on their cell phones instead of doing their jobs safely and correctly. Of course we can never leave drugs and alcohol out of the causal equation either.

Flash Gordon
Flash Gordon

@Bill — I 100% agree. This type of thing is very common and all it needs it the sequence of events for everyone to see what’s going on for a moment. I saw one guy jump out of the back of a moving landscape truck and another jump into a pit with water and electricity to retrieve a tool. He was so lucky to be alive when it arced. Stupid stuff happens all the time and it’s a lack of paying attention or ignorance. Occasionally it’s drugs and alcohol, but it’s the everyday normal that people don’t understand.

Sleepless in Seattle
Sleepless in Seattle

Dump trucks should have a safety mechanism to refuse anything but 1st and reverse gears when the boom is not retracted. This is not an expensive idea compared to the cost of the damage done by these accidents.

Flash Gordon
Flash Gordon

Sometimes you need to be able to drive forward or backward a bit to help the contents slide out of the truck. I’m not sure if the accidents are common much as the potential for them is very common. You need a series of unfortunate events for then to occur. Maybe it’s like rolling 6 dice. Seeing a 6 is ordinary. Sometimes you have Yahtzee.

Clover sniff

That’s why the commenter suggested, 1st and reverse.

When would you ever need to go more than 5mph with the bed raised?

Hydraulic cylinder is clearly shown in the extended position. Driver did not feel the wind resistance? Damage to container matches contour of bridge. Container was raised before crash.

I think this stupid stuff happens all the time. He just chose poorly to travel under a bridge the day he forgot to lower the bed.

All roads are blocked to the presidential election audit! george soros will soon issue a statement and let everyone know when the “traffic issue” is fixed! The traffic emergency requires a team of computer hacking experts! Which is strange because traffic repairs are usually done by the local Dept. of Traffic guys! Anyway, in the meantime “for YOUR SAFETY” follow the Detour signs!

Maybe a DOT Required safety warning buzzer and blinking light next to the “hoist elevated” words and picture for numb skulls like this? Do dump trucks have them? Cars tell us when we leave keys in and lights on.

Bastiat
Bastiat

Yeah, pretty obvious the truck didn’t go “off the bridge” but hit it from the roadway below. The guardrail is pushed in; the truck could never get momentum enough at a right angle to its direction of travel to go through the rail and shift the bridge 6 feet. People have no sense. . . reporter people, especially.

Scot

Hoist levers are usually a retrofitted thing ,many times by the owner operator, and if the pto is left on the lever can get bumped without realizing it, depending on the setup. You’re right, needs a better solution.

Bill
Bill

Yes, actually they do have something like you speak of. It’s the thing known as the “PTO” function, which is basically connected with the vehicle’s transmission, and it must be engaged when the primary hydraulic functions of a tractor/trailer are used, like dump trucks, garbage trucks, lowering or raising loading platforms on trailers, etc. When it is engaged, there is generally a red warning light illuminated on the face of the PTO console, and now in the newer vehicles, there is usually a warning icon which will be active on your dash. Regardless of these features, the ultimate responsibility lies with the driver/operator of the vehicle. The driver of this vehicle will more than likely have to submit to a mandatory urine test for cause based on the accident, and likely even a breath test. I hauled construction equipment for years with Prime Equipment, RSC Equipment, United Rentals, etc, and I over the years had to submit to both urine and breath tests under the Federally mandated laws of the DOT. Regardless of the results of this drivers tests, he/she will more than likely be terminated for negligence, because his Company will be paying a lot of money to the State of Georgia for bridge repair, etc. “Keep on Truckin” but do it safely. Lol.

I agree with the posters saying the truck did not skid off the bridge. The railings pushed inward and the direction that the bridge shifted indicate that the bridge was hit from outside.
It looks like the trailer still jammed in the bridge was elevated and that’s exactly what happened. If you click on the continue reading link, it says nothing about the truck going off the bridge through the railing but clearly states that it was an elevated dump trailer that struck the bridge from below.

Unkledaddy
Unkledaddy

It happened in Georgia so let’s hope it shifted to the RIGHT, but probably the truck was full of absentee ballots and it shifted to the left.

Deplorable Neanderthal
Deplorable Neanderthal

Not sure who’s more incompetent. The truck driver or the writer of this article.

Bill in NWA
Bill in NWA

Here’s some simple truth. After retiring from the military in 1997, I acquired a CDL and got into the heavy construction equipment hauling business. Every CDL truck driver has a responsibility in writing to ensure their vehicle/trailer and any “load” is properly secured/stowed etc. Operators are legally required to check their vehicle and load before they put their vehicle in motion, including a complete “walk around” inspection of the tractor/trailer as well as the load, prior to driving off. Had this guy done that, this more than likely would have never happened. Whenever I see incidents/stories like this, the first things in my mind are cell phone distractions and drugs/alcohol in the system. I worked with a young driver one time and he irritated the hell out of me because he constantly was either scrolling on his cell phone or had it plastered to his ear, talking to his wife or something. That was a major pet peeve of mine. Many trucking Companies nowadays have rules against using phones when vehicle is in motion, and some even prohibit CB radio’s from being in their trucks. This driver more than likely had just completed dumping a load earlier, and prior to lowering and stowing and securing his dump bed, he “may” have got distracted by his cell phone, jumped in his cab, started talking, forgot about his dump bed being raised, and pulled off without dismounting his cab and doing a required “walk around” inspection of his rig before he took off down the road. Then there’s the drugs and alcohol issue. That comes later because he/she will have to submit to drug and alcohol tests. Been there , done that. As clear thinking common-sense based people know, apathy and inattention are a major and very common cause of injuries and accidents in pretty much all jobs.

The guard rails are pointing inward. The current story is not possible.

Travis Taylor
Travis Taylor

Right, it would have to have been hit from the outside. Like a dump truck with the bed still raised up

calmdownbeavis
calmdownbeavis

It also look like the tail of the truck bed is down below which is weird. What if the truck went off the road before the guardrail, landed in a vertical position on the roadway below and then slammed back into the bridge from outside the guardrail?

calmdownbeavis
calmdownbeavis

Never mind. Raised truckbed described below is the best explanation.
