High level chemistry is also very difficult to automate and would require designing a robotic laboratory that can measure substances, clean up chemical spills, know HOW to clean up chemical spills, etc. It must also be able to record quantitative and qualitative information accurately and compile it into a legible report. If automation hits the lab, it would likely be a humanoid robot that must be able to do the same things. I don’t see that coming for a very long time and even then, the manufacturing costs will likely make it just as expensive as a chemist.
A chemistry degree is something that I can pack up and fly to another country with and there will not be a shortage of work for people with such a degree.
I’m a doctor of Chemistry. Get as high up in the field as you can. You end understanding how everything works, how pretty much the entire Universe actually behaves, you can get by on so much less money if you want to. You can do literally anything else and excel at it. And you don’t need to answer to ANYONE if you don’t want to, and still do OK.
Robots aren’t replacing anything that isn’t repetitious. It may be harder to find a gig, but you’ll be self-motivated and left alone in that gig. It’s worth it. This woman above, whoever she is, will blissfully waste all that money and achieve nothing in her life. You’re doing the right thing learning something that can’t be taken from you.
